When you paint the inside of your home, there are a number of points which are very important. These points will impact the overall look of the interior and how well the paint holds up over time. Knowing these points will help you incorporate them into the planning you need to do before you start painting.
Know The Sheen
The sheen or finish of the paint you choose is important. There are 3 types which are commonly used as they are satin, gloss, and matte. Gloss and satin will be best for the areas in your home with high levels of traffic such as the hallway. This is due to the fact that it holds up better against touch and can be easily cleaned.
However, these finishes can make imperfections in the walls more noticeable. If you do not want to see the imperfections you should look at matte-like finish paints. These paints will hide the imperfections of patched areas and wavy drywall.
Try Samples First
There is no way to tell how good or bad a paint color will look on your wall until it is there. That is why you need to look at using samples first. You can easily buy sample size paint tins and test them on the wall before you commit to buying larger paint tins. You can do a Google search to find companies that offer free samples.
When you use the sample, you will be able to judge how the color will work on a large area. This is better than using a swatch because you can step back and really assess the color. It is better to spend a bit on the sample paints than to have a wall that you hate and have to repaint.
Always Prepare The Area
A lot of people do not realize that most of your time is actually going to be spent preparing the area you will be painting. To prepare the area, you will have to tape off all the sharp lines and move all of your furniture. Any imperfections in the wall will need to be repaired and patched before you start. You also need to take the time to protect your floor.
If you are going to be painting the doors of your home, you should remove the door knobs and plates. If you cannot remove them, you will have to take them off. After all, you do not want to have spots of paint on the doorknob when you are done.
Use The Right Tools
Paint rollers will need more equipment such as handles, poles and the rollers, but they are important when you paint your home. They allow you to cover a larger space in less time than a brush. However, this does not mean that you should not be using a brush as well.
It is recommended that you paint the majority of the wall with the roller. You will need to switch to the brush when you reach the corners, top, and bottom of the wall. This is due to the fact that the brush will provide a smoother coat in these areas.
